Abstract
Background: Clinical trials are the gold standard for evaluating interventions, but high attrition rates waste time and lead to missing data. Strategies that enhance retention rates are needed. The Methods-MI approach increases participant retention through interactive orientation sessions, but is intensive and often involves person-to-person interaction. Asynchronous approaches could reduce burden for participants and research teams. The purpose of this work is to develop and evaluate a brief video to improve retention rates in University of Michigan Roybal Center trials. Methods: This project included three phases: informational video development, review by the Roybal Center community advisory board (CAB), and evaluation by Match AIM trial participants. In the development phase, key components of the Methods-MI approach were imported into Notebook LM, which created our video. In phase 2, CAB members (i.e. 13 middle-aged and older adults around the United States) viewed the video, and rated the extent that the video increased their knowledge of clinical trials, the understandability of the video, and their opinions about the use of AI, using a 5 point likert scale (1-Strongly disagree, 5-Strongly agree). In phase 3, Match AIM eligible participants will be randomized into one of two groups: one will receive the informational video and one will not. After viewing the video, participants will rate acceptability of the video on a 5-point likert scale. Enrollment and retention rates will be compared between groups. Results: Of the 13 CAB members, 7 provided feedback. Each question’s rating was favorable (score range: 3.14 – 5). The video was considered to be acceptable and will be evaluated in the Match AIM trial. Results are expected for Spring 2027. Conclusion: The results from this research will identify potential easy, low-cost methods for retaining participants in future clinical trials. Survey feedback can inform revisions on the video to increase acceptability.
