Abstract

Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) is a common, negative side effect of cancer treatment that often results in sensory deficits such as impaired vibration and temperature detection. These sensory impairments impact balance, mobility, and overall quality of life in cancer survivors. CIPN has widely been attributed to peripheral nerve damage, however, research has surfaced that suggests that sensory dysfunction may be impacted by both peripheral and central nervous system processes. This project focuses specifically on the sensory assessment component of a larger ongoing study examining sensorimotor function in individuals with CIPN. Specifically, this project examines the quantitative sensory measures including vibration detection and temperature detection thresholds, to analyze sensory dysfunction and assess changes in sensory function over time. These measures are used to evaluate whether sensory deficits can be altered with a non-invasive brain stimulation intervention targeting central nervous system plasticity. Overall, this project contributes to a deeper understanding of sensory dysfunction and supports investigation into whether the central nervous system plays a role in sensory impairments experienced by cancer survivors with CIPN.
