Abstract
The book, Private Music Lessons: A Manual for Teachers written by Dr Colleen Conway, was written in 2019 with a goal to help guide private lesson instructors in the practice of actively teaching. It contains enlightening content on how to implement many common musical practices and structures into learning, as well as how to efficiently manage a business, and how to engage with students of all diversity and ages. However, since this 2019 edition, a lot has significantly changed in the musical field. By searching for updated sources on these topics, discerning the content already in the book, and conducting interviews with former students (about a class they took that uses the book as a guide, MUSED 470/570) and gathering their suggestions, the aim is to develop a second edition of this book that can be more applicable to current methods and times in teaching, to help provide an updated teaching guide for private lesson instructors. These changes will therefore allow these teachers to be better equipped, prepared, and knowledgeable of the experience and process of teaching private lessons in order to provide their students with the most enriching learning possible.
