Abstract
In the field of psychology, it can be extremely difficult, even nearly impossible, to find fitting and proper mental health resources within rural areas. In my project, Comprehensive Integrated Remote Care for saving Lives for birthing people with SUD – Upper Peninsula (Circle UP), we are aiming to provide accessible, comprehensive, and person-centered virtual addiction medicine and perinatal psychiatry support for pregnant patients in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan with an Opioid or other Substance Use Disorder (OUD/SUD). Fear is the leading reason why birthing individuals with OUD/SUD are resistant to seek help, which demonstrates the need for person-centered, trauma-informed care. This project is reviewing treatment methods that have been effective for those experiencing OUD/SUD and co-occurring mental health conditions, while also hoping to expand on previous knowledge to form new solutions in order to help those in rural populations. Based on research that has been previously conducted, I have found that combinations of different therapy approaches and medications have been most helpful for these patients. Offering these treatments as online services has been beneficial for those who lack resources in rural populations. These are factors that will all help my project reach its goal of providing the best treatment possible for patients. Although every patient will react differently to different treatments, my project places emphasis on the importance of creating a safe and trusting environment where the patient will feel supported and will gain the motivation to seek positive outcomes.
