Abstract

The goal of the Usable Vehicle Interface Design (UVID) project is to develop guidelines that make vehicle controls and displays easier to use for everyone, including people with disabilities. Currently, modern vehicle interfaces do not necessarily accommodate people with disabilities. One part of the project is to conduct laboratory testing in vehicles and mockups, asking participants with disabilities to complete driving tasks using controls and displays. Another key part of the project is to conduct standardized testing to evaluate each participant’s functional capabilities. These protocols will evaluate near vision, far vision, color vision, dexterity, range-of-motion, hearing, and cognition. Results from functional assessment testing will be compared to self-reported disability levels and types using linear regression. A spearman correlation matrix would be computed to envision significant associations between measured and self-reported disability levels. Results can be used to support future guidelines for usable vehicle interface design.
