Abstract
The goal of the Usable Vehicle Interface Design (UVID) project is to develop guidelines that make vehicle controls and displays easier to use for everyone, including people with disabilities. One part of the project is to conduct laboratory testing in vehicles and mockups, asking participants with disabilities to complete driving tasks using controls and displays that do and do not meet current recommendations. A simulated in-vehicle infotainment system (IVIS) has been designed to allow participants to select a radio station in different ways and to add a phone using different numbers of steps. These tasks will test hypotheses related to dexterity and cognitive disability. Other tasks will combine radio station selection with glancing at outside mirrors, as well as operating digital HVAC controls placed at different locations. These tasks will evaluate hypotheses related to flexibility and dexterity disabilities. Usability will be evaluated through task completion time and error rate documented on video, and participant feedback provided through Qualtrics questionnaires. Results of testing should help inform vehicle interface design guidelines to make them easier to use by people with disabilities.
