Abstract
This research is important because it will allow the second edition of a book to be revised to its full extent with cognitive development resources, as well as being able to use that evidence to further support private lesson music teachers. The research question is: “How does developmental psychology relate to music education to support what private lesson teachers should be focusing on at certain ages?†This means that the gap it will be filling is a practical one since this information will help the professor write the second edition of their book as well as giving private music lesson teachers valuable scientific information to back up their teaching methods or improve their methods. The first edition of the book was read and found areas that could use further evidential support or needed to be fixed. This was later identified as developmental psychology resources. Literature review research was conducted through University of Michigan provided databases and other online resources to find more academic papers, articles, studies, dissertations, etc., for the best evidence to include. It was concluded that by using Piaget’s cognitive development stages, areas of focus for private teachers can be estimated. A limitation is bridging the gap between music education and developmental psychology. Finally, an implication of this research is allowing private music lesson teachers to have scientific knowledge to choose how they can best teach their students.
