Expanding Equity-Focused Assessment in Introductory Mathematics Courses

P. Gavin LaRose, Mathematics | 2022-2023

This proposal will allow the expansion of equity-focused assessment practices in our Introductory Program mathematics courses by providing bridge funding for student workers in a pilot proctored computer testing center on North Campus. Over the past three years the Department of Mathematics has been working with CRLT and the College of LSA on a curriculum reform in its Introductory Program courses that has at its core the goal of increasing how inclusive these courses are of students who have traditionally been excluded from or pushed out of STEM fields. We have fundamentally reshaped the assessment in the courses to include a significant mastery component, and also have implemented changes to improve instruction in the courses. To support the mastery assessment we are dramatically increasing the number and capacity of our computer testing labs, including a pilot site in the Duderstadt Center on North Campus. This proposal provides bridge funding to pay student workers to proctor in this pilot site.
