Svitlana Rogovyk, Slavic Languages and Literatures | 2022-2023
Ukrainian is the state language of Ukraine, one of the largest countries in Europe. It is also spoken in the Ukrainian Diaspora in Canada, Kazakhstan, Russia, the U.S., and other countries. In 2014, Ukrainian language was included into the Pentagon language priority list. Currently, Ukrainian is also one of the critical languages for the National Security Education Program. U-M is the only North American University to offer an undergraduate minor in Ukrainian Studies. The academic minor in Ukrainian is a multi-faceted program that integrates Ukrainian studies into broader intellectual and policy agendas while promoting research and scholarly work on contemporary Ukraine in the United States. Promotion of Ukrainian studies among different area studies within the University of Michigan community and beyond, will encourage diversity of future cohorts of the Ukrainian language program, and in turn foster collaboration and increase feasibility of future interdisciplinary work.
The suggested project will focus on three different areas of needs for the University of Michigan Ukrainian Language Program.
1. To develop and implement course materials based on multicompetence approach and student self-assessment in Ukrainian 351 and 352 (Ukrainian for Speakers of Slavic Languages).
2. To develop and implement course materials for Ukrainian 151 & 152 to supplement the online textbook Podorozhi (Trips) and to generate a focus on inclusive teaching, especially around gender and race.
3. To Pilot “Can Do” Self-Assessment Tool for Ukrainian 151/152, 251/252, and 351/352 Language Students
