The Audiovisual Lexicon: Completing a Diverse Foundation for Media Literacy

Vincent Longo and Matthew Solomon, Screen Arts and Cultures | 2022-2023

The Audiovisual Lexicon is a comprehensive foundation for media literacy that aggregates the collective expertise of a diverse group of scholars, educators, and practitioners in a single open access streaming video resource composed of three-minute videos, each explaining a key analytical or conceptual term narrated by a different individual through a diverse set of film, television, and media examples. After completing nearly 100 entries (62 of which were made available online in March 2020 in draft versions, garnering more than 50,000 views worldwide), funding is sought to complete the resource by expanding it with additional entries that extend coverage more substantially to television and digital media, and formally publishing it as a refereed open access university press digital multimedia publication consistent with the highest standards of accessible publishing.
