Abstract
Good afternoon, my name is Jasmine Mumpfield. I’m a rising sophomore majoring in gender and Health with a minor in AfroAmerican and African studies. I worked with Authority Health, an organization that strengthens the healthcare safety net through community-based primary care services, issues advocacy, health insurance enrollment and navigation, and a health data portal. The organization also administers the Albert Schweitzer Fellowship, which provides graduate students opportunities to improve health in underserved local communities. My project, in partnership with another DCERP fellow, was to research how food security has been affected by COVID and what types of emergency plans have been put into place since the “start” of COVID. I also conducted interviews with past Albert Schweitzer fellows and mentors to gauge the sustainability of their projects after they left. I enjoyed getting to connect and talk with people in the public health sector because it has given me more insight into what potential paths I can take career wise in the future. Participating in DCERP has been a worthwhile experience because it taught me more about what it takes to work in the nonprofit sector and what it means to be apart of the change you want to see in your own communities.
