Abstract
The primary focus of this research project is to examine whether remediated digital documents improve accessibility and usability for individuals with visual impairments or those who rely on assistive technologies such as screen readers, mouse controls, or keyboard navigation. Many digital documents are not designed with accessibility standards in mind, which can create barriers to accessing information. This study aims to determine whether document remediation meaningfully improves user experience for these populations and whether it also benefits users without disabilities. The study will involve two participant groups: (1) individuals who regularly use assistive technologies to access digital documents, and (2) individuals who do not rely on assistive technologies. Both groups will be provided with remediated and non-remediated versions of the same documents and asked to complete tasks using each version. Participants will then reflect on their experiences accessing, navigating, and understanding the documents. Data will be collected through virtual Zoom interviews and/or structured questionnaires distributed via Google Forms. The results will be analyzed to compare accessibility, usability, comprehension, and overall satisfaction across both document types and participant groups. This research aims to highlight the importance of accessible document design and provide insight into how remediation practices can support more inclusive access to digital information.
