Abstract

In Professor Moldwin’s magnetometer lab, my primary responsibilities include analyzing thirty three years of magnetometer data to study long term variability in Earth’s geomagnetic field. I developed and use custom Python code to calculate magnetic field magnitude and its instantaneous rate of change, allowing me to identify tends and statistically significant patterns. I clean, organize, and process large datasets to ensure accuracy and consistency. My work involves distinguishing geomagnetically quiet days from disturbed periods to establish a baseline quiet state of the magnetosphere. I apply statistical tools to valuate changes across three solar cycles., including calculating the mean values and other key metrics of geomagnetic activity. I also interpret results within the context of space weather theory, document methods clearly, and prepare findings for discussion and presentation. Overall, my role is to transform long term magnetic field observations into meaningful insights about magnetosphere behavior.
