Abstract
The MyBestGI Study is a randomized controlled trial that recruited 240 overweight or obese adults at increased risk for colorectal cancer (CRC) due to either personal or family history of polyps and/or CRC. This study is testing three different methods that could assist with adherence to a cancer preventive diet. Medication use, especially medications that affect diet and body weight change, could be an important confounder of the results and may help explain some of the variability in the results. The present analysis evaluates baseline data from the 240 participants in the MyBestGI dietary intervention study. Medication use was classified into categories of medication class. The impact of medication use on weight status and a marker of fruit and vegetable intake, namely skin carotenoids, was evaluated at baseline. A total of 18 participants reported taking GLP-1 type medications, and average BMI did not differ by whether or not they were taking this type of medication. However, participants taking GLP-1 type medications had lower skin carotenoids than those who did not. This data gives us a better understanding of how medication use relates to baseline nutritional biomarkers and it may help improve interpretation of the trial outcomes. Once all 240 participants finish 12 months of participation in the study, changes over time will also be evaluated. The long-term goal of this research is to develop a dietary intervention method that is feasible to implement in medical settings where high-risk individuals receive their care.
