Abstract
Paradrawings are unplanned drawings that appear in manuscripts, added to the work later rather than as part of the original intended design. Previous work in the field has examined marginalia, paracontent, and general reader response, but little research has been conducted on paradrawings specifically. This project is the first to systematically research paradrawings, particularly in early medieval European manuscripts. Manuscripts are reviewed for instances of paradrawings, which are then collected and entered into a database. A metadata description is written for each instance, using vocabulary developed to describe the paradrawings in a consistent and exact manner, for easier organization and future reference. With the assistance of this database, more research can be done into paradrawings, enabling greater understanding of artistic processes, the relationship between writing and drawing, and the relationship between readers and manuscripts.
