Abstract

Ontologies play a critical role in organizing and standardizing biological data in a wide range of databases and research studies. The Cell Line Ontology (CLO) was developed to provide a structured and consistent representation of cell line information. However, inconsistencies have been found in how CLO cell line terms are named, marked, and structured, which have limited the ontology’s usefulness for data analysis relevant to our research work. Therefore, in this project, I aimed to improve the standardization of cell line representations within the CLO. Using the Protégé ontology editor, I have looked at 9,813 available cell lines and identified areas where naming schemes, annotations, or structural representation have become inconsistent. In my analysis, I used available ontology data from Protégé and organized it in a spreadsheet to facilitate systemic analysis. Through this process, we have used the ontology to clearly identify any discrepancies in the cell lines and support efforts to standardize the cell-line terminology across the ontology. By enhancing the consistency and organization of cell line data in the CLO, our research contributes to more reliable data integration through ontologies and supports future biological and biomedical research that relies on standardized data about cell lines.
