Flying to the Pearl (Predeparture)

Before my flight to the enchanting island of Sri Lanka, I found myself wrestling with a mix of eager anticipation and an unexpected visitor: nostalgia. My heart ached a little, throbbing with the yearning to see my family back in China. It had been a full year—a year of growth, challenges, and countless memories, yet none experienced with those I hold dear.
I am, by nature, reveling in the joys of travel. The open road has always been my teacher, and my companion, offering me a window into the expanses of life and the souls that pepper its landscapes. Each trip is a chapter in my story, every fellow traveler a verse in my poetry of journeying. But this particular return to my roots beckoned with a weariness I couldn’t shake.
From Ann Arbor, where Huron River whispered its goodbye, I boarded a train to Chicago, my mind awash with thoughts of the next trip, Tokyo, as the countryside blurred by for four hours. The Magnificent Mile was a dazzling spectacle, a shining interlude before the next morning’s Uber ride to O’Hare, where I crossed paths with an Ethiopian driver whose tale of solitude in a foreign land tugged at my sense of belonging.
Chaos erupted in O’Hare—a testament to the unpredictable nature of travel. My friend and I found ourselves entwined in a travel agency’s deceit, threatening to unravel our meticulously laid plans. A mix-up in the itinerary led to a scramble at the check-in counter, a tension-filled two and a half hours which eventually saw my friend rearrange her flight to Tokyo.
In Japan, when applying for the shore pass, I was faced with a stark choice by customs officials, their words as stern as the predicament before me: depart within two days or face the risk of overstaying. A whirlwind of reservations followed, and as I awaited resolution, fate delivered a companion to share in the uncertainty—a fellow traveler, a sister-in-stride from New York, proving once again that the road has a curious way of acquainting strangers.
Ultimately, after the trip to Tokyo, I landed on Chinese soil on May 7th, only to repack and venture forth again five days later, my days a flurry of embraces and hasty visits through three cities. I wanted to soak in every second with my family, whose unwavering support had been my bastion through the previous year’s adventures.
Jet-setting across the globe, I carry the essence of home with me—an amalgam of love, memories, and the little tokens that ground me: my power socket, visa card, a diary bursting with contemplations, a pen, the company of books, and a mindset eternally ripe for discovery.
In every stamp on my passport, every smile exchanged in lands unknown, I uncover a new facet of my ever-expanding “hometown.” Gratitude threads through my being, for this grand tapestry of eyes met, hands held, and hearts understood spans more than maps can chart. As I traverse this wondrous globe, I remain anchored by the connections that bind us all, in pursuit of the myriad stories that await in the heart’s every unexplored corner. Each journey shapes me, and as I stride forward, I do so as a citizen of the world—a world that is, after all, the home I am destined to meet at every turn.
