Abstract

“Background: Poor communication between physicians and nurses is one of the most common causes of adverse events for hospitalized patients, including death. Gathering information regarding the factors that contribute to shared understanding could help identify causes of communication breakdowns, making it easier to develop strategies to overcome them.

Method: We used videos that were recorded at the University of Michigan Hospital of actual conversations between Physicians and Nurses. Following, we used a software system called Elan Linguistic Annotator to transcribe and segment videos. Next, we used VRM Verbal Response Modes taxonomy (Coding book) in order to determine the communication patterns that could lead to a (lack) shared understanding.

Results: The data analysis is ongoing but I mastered using elan software and gained more knowledge using Verbal Response Modes Book (VRM).

Conclusion: The study is ongoing but I learned a lot more about using elan software and Verbal Response Modes and met a lot of my academic, educational and personal goals.”
