Who can take the class?
You must be a first-year University of Michigan-Ann Arbor student, formally invited by the research team to take the class, and 18 years or older. Because the course is part of a long-term research study, students need to be randomly selected to participate in the class. Those pre-selected for participation will receive a formal invitation email.
How do I register for this class?
- Student receives an invitation email with an RSVP link
- Student completes their RSVP form
- Department of Sociology emails student an override code for the class in 1-3 business days
- Student goes to Wolverine Access, ADDs the override code to their backpack, and proceeds through the registration steps
- Wolverine Access will recognize that the override was issued in your name and will allow you to add the course even if it still says that the course is closed.

- Override codes have an expiration date, so register as soon as possible.
When is the class offered?
Students have the opportunity to take SOC/SW 223 during the first or second semester of their first year. It is a 7-week mini-course, offered twice a semester. The first half of the semester is called “A” and the second half of the semester is called “B”.
During Fall 2026, the class is offered during these times:
- Lecture Mon 9-10am, Discussions Wed/Fri 8:30-10:00am
- Lecture Mon 10-11am, Discussions Wed/Fri 10-11:30am
- Lecture Mon 12-1pm, Discussions Wed/Fri 11:30-1pm
- Lecture Mon 1-2pm, Discussions Tues/Thurs 1-2:30pm
- Lecture Mon 2-3pm, Discussion Wed/Fri 1-2:30pm
- Lecture Mon 5-6pm, Discussion Tues/Thurs 4-5:30pm
What if none of the class days/times work with my schedule?
You can enroll in the class in either the first or second semester of your first year of college. If none of the class times fit your schedule during the Fall term, consider enrolling in the Winter term instead!
Can I pick which discussion section I attend?
You can only attend the discussion section associated with the lecture section you choose. Because we want you to learn with the same peers each week, lecture and discussion times cannot be mixed and matched.
Could I take this class for 1 credit or no credit instead?
This course can only be taken for 2 credits. There is no exception to this. If you would like to exceed 18 credits, we recommend reaching out to the Office of Financial Aid to discuss what this might mean for you. Their email is: https://finaid.umich.edu/.
I was invited to take this course but it doesn’t fit my schedule. Could I take it next school year instead?
Unfortunately, the class is only open to students in their first year of college. After you finish your first year, you are no longer eligible to take the course. At present, there are no exceptions to this policy.
