What is the study about?
The Sexual Citizens Course and Research Project seeks to understand how we can better prevent sexual misconduct on college campuses. It is a randomized study (HUM00270529) designed to assess the effects of teaching about sexual citizenship in a structured course. The study will be conducted for five years and will potentially conclude at that time.
Who can participate in the study?
You must be a first-year University of Michigan-Ann Arbor student, 18 years or older, and formally invited by the research team to participate in the study. Those pre-selected for participation will receive a formal invitation email.
Who is running the study?
The study is led by five Michigan faculty:

- Richard Tolman, Co-Investigator (Sheldon D Rose Collegiate Professor of Social Work)
How much are participants compensated?
Control participants are asked to complete a survey every fall and winter semester through graduation. They are compensated $25 for every completed survey. Spaced out over eight semesters, control participants can earn up to $200 by the time they graduate ($25 for each survey x 8 semesters).
Treatment participants who take and pass SOC/SW 223 will receive $300 upon completing the class. They are also asked to complete a survey every fall and winter semester through graduation. They are compensated $25 for every completed survey. Treatment participants can earn up to $500 by the time they graduate ($300 for course + ($25 for each survey x 8 semesters)).

I was selected to participate in the survey, but I am not 18 years old yet. Is it possible for me to still participate?
You need to be 18 to both join the study and enroll in the class. We do offer students the opportunity to take the class during the first half of the semester or during the second half of the semester, though. So, if you turned 18 before the second half of the Fall semester, you could still join and enroll. Alternatively, if you turn 18 before the Winter term starts, you could take the class in the Winter semester instead.
