Recently, I went on a research trip to the Milwaukee, Wisconsin to interview two Chicanas about their activist work during the Chicano Movement. In order to prepare me, Professor Cotera had me read Mexicans in Wisconsin by Sergio M. González. The purpose of the reading was to provde me with some context of the history of los primeros/the first Mexicans who migrated to Wisconsin to the present day.
This book was insightful because this was the first time I learned about the diverse journeys of Mexicans in the Midwest. Also, it was important for me to understand how Mexicans in Wisconsin excludes how impactful the work of Chicana feminism was during the 60’s and 70’s. It was important for me to have a bit of knowledge about the Mexicans history in Wisconsin because it prepared me to have a better understanding of the past events Eloisa Gómez and Tess Arenas brought up during their testimony when we were filming them
