Free Blog: Sweet Potato Pie

Sweet potato pie is an extremely important dessert in my family. We bake sweet potato pies for every holiday, and sometimes on other special occasions, too. Usually, my mother or my granddad makes the pies for the family. Whenever we host extended family at our house for a holiday gathering, my mom will purposefully make more pies than she knows we can eat so that we can freeze them for later. Basically, this means we end up having sweet potato pie for breakfast and every snack for the following month. I can’t complain.

This summer, I finally got to try my hand at baking a sweet potato pie for the first time. I might’ve added a little too much nutmeg, but the pie was delicious nonetheless. The recipe is very simple! All you need are large sweet potatoes, eggs, butter, vanilla, nutmeg, evaporated milk, flour, and baking powder. Oh and don’t forget to either buy pie crusts or look up a recipe to make them from scratch!

I love this recipe and this tradition in my family. For me, sweet potato pie is almost sacred. I’m convinced that no sweet potato pie will ever compare to my granddad’s sweet potato pie, and I’m not inclined to test that theory. I’ll stick to exclusively eating my family’s sweet potato pie recipe, thank you very much. What is also special about the recipe is that it has been passed down through generations. The recipe can’t be found online or in any cookbook. It has been developed through trial and error over the years and the only record of it exists on an old piece of notebook paper in my mother’s recipe folder. As I was making a sweet potato pie for the first time myself a few weeks ago, I couldn’t help but feel like I was finally let in on some long held family secret.

I don’t have any pictures of the pie I baked this summer, but coincidentally I just came across a picture I took on Thanksgiving a couple years ago of a slice of pie I was enjoying with a cup of tea.

I’d love to chat with you all about a recipe that is significant to you or your family!
