My name is Shania Baweja and I am a rising sophomore intending to major in Public Policy with a minor in English. I use she/her pronouns and identify as a South Asian woman. I am really passionate about intersectional feminism and maintaining that lens in research settings, which is why I am so glad to be joining WAGSFP this summer! I am working with Ph.D. candidate Sara Morell on her project called “Feeling Ready to Run: How Institutional Support Boosts Women’s Interest in Running for Office.” This project is mixed-methods but most of my contribution is related to qualitative data retrieval. Sara is trying to explore the influence of women’s candidate training organizations (WCTOs) on diverse groups of women. Using race and ethnicity to measure how WCTOs target populations will help us understand what networks of women are being excluded from recruitment. Since we are working with all the female candidates in state-level legislature from 2012 to 2020, much of the race and ethnicity data is incomplete. My role is to find substantial evidence to identify the race and ethnicity of 1300 unidentified women. As I find this data I will also be looking for trends across states with the hope of delivering a visualization of these trends. Since this is my first research project I will mainly be assisting Sara with data entry while also learning from the work she has put into her own dissertation. I anticipate facing challenges while looking through publicly available information because some states are not as adept at keeping accurate records. However, I am hopeful that being thorough while identifying this information will help us create an accurate and one-of-a-kind database. Really looking forward to what comes next!
