As I reflect back on my first post, it is strange to see that it was written just a few weeks ago. Yet, my knowledge of research has greatly improved. A lot has changed as I took a completely different direction with my project. Instead of working with the data already produced in SPSS, I conducted a literature review on something that has not been done yet. I have learned so much about that process and since my past UROP experiences have not required me to present a poster I am continuing to learn more about the processes of a symposium and creating something from my findings. The challenges I faced were not the ones that I anticipated but were similar in the way that I was walking into the unknown with this project. But as I dove in and had a great team by my side, this summer has greatly exceeded my expectations. I am feeling so empowered by the intelligent people supporting me and uplifting me from my lab, my mentor, Emily, and even the other fellows. This WAGSFP experience has helped me learn more about research technicalities and time management and has allowed me to gain a firm base as I continue to work with the Prevention Research and Health Equity Lab going forward.
As for advice for future fellows, please cherish these moments. Although it may seem chaotic and overwhelming at first to dive into something many are unfamiliar with, you learn so much while also surprising yourself. Slow down and enjoy the ride and just be grateful for all of the wonderful people guiding you through this process. Everything will be okay and you will succeed. And of course, best of luck!
