[su_heading size=”20″]Hola, my name is Sonia Aracely Olmos! I am currently an undergraduate student at California State University, Monterey Bay who is majoring is Human Communications with a concentration in Chicanx Studies and has a minor in Service Learning. Many times others may perceive me as a bookworm or organizational freak but, if you got to know me outside of my academic setting you would learn that there is much more to me than you think. So remember, don’t judge a book by its cover![/su_heading]

Having an older brother and younger sister, has given me no option but to identify as a middle child. Although many constantly remind me of the middle child being the one who is neglected, ignored and forgotten by their family, I would actually argue against it.
Let me explain…
First off, it is true, being the middle child makes you become the floating balloon your family has to look up to the sky to remind themselves that you do exist. However, that was actually beneficial for me because my brother automatically got the baggage of responsibility, perfection and natural born leader attributes and skills due to being the oldest, so he was constantly stressing over not disappointing others and messing up. Then there’s me, growing up I had the chance to view my imperfections and mistakes as positive because there was no one in my family expecting anything of me. Then when my younger sister was born, she automatically got the unconditional love and care from my family for being the baby, so my family would constantly worry about her and need to check up on her to know that she was okay. Again, then there’s me, growing up I had to learn how to love, take care of, and put myself first before others because I was constantly skipped over and that helped me become more independent than my younger sister.

My older brother and younger sister have been at the center of attention, while I have been pushed to the back, but that granted me time and space to find myself and grow into the woman I aspire to become on my own account. That is why I would argue that being the middle child is the best because it made me become the bridge who connects my family by being able to genuinely listen and respond to each of them when they wish to talk. Being my family’s bridge is awesome because it taught me how much I enjoy interacting with humans and I know that my experience as a middle child led me to hold a firm grip on choosing to become a professor as my career goal.
I love to travel and realized at a young age that classrooms have always given me the ability to travel around the world because it is through my teachers, professors and classmates where I learned about new experiences, cultures, ideas, languages, traditions, history etc. that have sparked a curiosity in me of wanting to know more. That is why I love books because they are my source of traveling to different duration of times in history and into the authors mind. So if you love books, let’s talk and share!
Lastly, I would argue being the middle child automatically makes you the coolest one as well.
So, now that you know a little bit more about me as a middle child, the song “Am I Wrong” by Nico & Vinz also perfectly explains the life of a middle child! The first time I heard this song, I knew that the song was written for me.[su_youtube url=”https://youtu.be/VBmEJZofz2s” autoplay=”no”]
