Good morning everyone! Although it’s been a bit of an unusual week (just in time for the “day in the life” post, of course), I’ve come up with a model day of my work at my lab, including some pictures and videos. Most of the videos don’t have interesting sound because I don’t want to talk to myself in the halls, and I try to stay quiet around the mice.
8:00ish: I arrive at the building (I park across the street at Kroger). There’s fair bit of security. I usually use a different entrance with a security guard to whom you must show your Mcard to enter, but due to some crazy construction I’ve been coming in this way.
8:15ish: I get to my desk. Often I just chill here working on random stuff (like the never-ending spreadsheets and data to type up) until my mentor, Nadia, gets here.
??:??ish: I do stuff with mice. Sometimes I do NMR (like MRI) on them, which involves putting them into tubes and then into a machine that measures their fat and lean mass. Other times I just do stuff with their food and body weights, and later I will be checking for newborn baby mice and weighing them, once that part of the study begins.
Between 11:30 and 1:30: Lunchtime! I eat at my lunch that I bring at my desk while doing work :/
Afternoon: more random stuff. I might do more spreadsheets, work with mice, or do random housekeeping stuff, like writing labels or filling tubes with liquid diet in preparation for surgery.
Finally, I leave for home between 5 and 6, always excited to eat dinner.
