Portrait of South Asia: Volume 2: Love – Barger Leadership Institute Student Voices

Portrait of South Asia: Volume 2: Love

By Ridhi Gupta

Portrait of South Asia (POSA) is the first South Asian magazine on campus, meant to be an
authentic portrait of the well-known and lesser-known aspects of South Asian identity, aspiring
to include narratives from individuals regardless of their creative abilities or interests in order to
truly gain an accurate representation of the South Asian student body. POSA strives to give
South Asian students a space to use art as a means to express their diverse experiences, crafting a
multifaceted narrative that dismantles stereotypes and ‘single story’ narratives. This year, our
magazine’s theme is love: in all its forms, familial, cultural, self love, and platonic, but more
often than not South Asian representation when it comes to romance is lacking. We want our
larger community to know that South Asian love is just as vibrant and present as anybody else’s.

As of the end of March, we have just sent our magazine to print, and preparations for the launch
party are underway, fulfilling our initial goals! Looking back on the year, our publication team
has developed leadership skills to fully collaborate and bring to life this publication. We were
able to collect, combine, create by fully taking advantage of every team member’s unique skill
set, whether they specialized in graphic design, makeup, or photography. Morseo, we were able
to all come together to best support the storyteller in their creative journey, and create the best
spread possible.

Every single team member came to our publication with a different background in arts, culture,
and academics. We were able to celebrate these differences not only through our magazine itself,
but in our publication team meetings as well, through cultural presentations! Everything that we
have learned this year, how to delegate, collaborate, and create together, we will use as we
continue to grow our publication next year. We are looking forward to launching our blog next
year, with regular posts from our editorial team, and expanding our social media presence. We
hope you will join us for the ride! In the meantime be sure to check out our website,
https://posamag.com/, and flip through this year’s issue: Love.
