What Are Microplastics?

So, what are microplastics?

“…small plastic pieces less than 5mm long which can be harmful to our ocean and aquatic life” (National Ocean Service)

Here are some of the MANY products in which they can be found in:

  • Laundry and dishwasher pods/tablets (the scrubbing agents in these products are made of microplastics)
  • Tea Bags (many contain a polypropylene ‘skeleton’)
  • Synthetic clothing (polyester, spandex, and nylon all shed microplastics every wash)
  • Larger plastics (as they break down in the environment and add to micro plastic pollution)

Here is a list of additional, common products that may contain microplastics:

Paint

Tires

Wet wipes

Glitter

Cigarette butts

Tennis balls

Facial scrubs

Toothpastes

Face wash

Makeup

Sunscreen

Deodorant

Nail polish
