Week 1 – letter to myself – Detroit Community-Engaged Research Program

Week 1 – letter to myself

I am expecting you to be able to gain a better understanding of what it is like to be a resident of the city of Detroit. I am anticipating obstacles getting situated with your placement and maintaining a level head in the face of entering an already tight-knit community. I hope you gain a plethora of information and skills regarding sustainable farming practices and are able to institute them into your daily life and personal garden. I hope you gain connections that tie you to the city of Detroit better than a visitor and are able to make personal friendships with the residents you work with. I also would like to help the youth of Detroit to develop good relationships with healthy foods. My current perception of Detroit is that it is a city that has historically put its burdens on residents’ backs while giving big businesses tax breaks (which again, falls on residents’ backs). I am hoping to contribute a helping hand with whatever needs my placement needs including collecting data about storm water management to help residents get a tax break, farming, data organization, and youth leadership readiness.
