It’s crazy and maybe a bit embarrassing how little I know about Detroit considering I only live 45 mins away. After my first in-person visit to my site, I feel like I have already learned a lot more about Detroit. I have always considered it a large city, but have never taken the time to really think about the communities that live here, and after 3 short weeks it’s been amazing to see how everybody knows each other and works to support each other. During a meeting with our program director, she started tearing up while talking about how strong the communities here are, and got visibly angry when talking about the stereotypes of the city and how they effect the people that live here. I feel so thankful to be able to interact and learn about this community, and can’t wait for the upcoming weeks!
