Week 3 – Detroit Community-Engaged Research Program

Week 3

My time working with Brilliant Detroit so far has showed me how strong of a community Detroit is, and how resilient and dedicated its community members are to strengthening their community and the families that live in it. The mentors I have at Brilliant are all extremely passionate, kind, and hard-working people who genuinely care about making a positive impact. Through them I have gained a passion for their mission and efforts as well. I have learned so much about Detroit and its residents and have grown an attachment to it. Talking with my fellow DCERP interns I learned that many of their organizations are also the same. They consist of very passionate and hard-working individuals who care deeply to the community they are working for. It is refreshing to see and meet people like that and it is an incredible opportunity to learn from them as well.

Even during COVID-19, Brilliant Detroit kept running, making their programs virtual so residents still had a space for them and their children to go to for community development. Many of these programs came back in person after COVID subsided, however, their tutoring programs have stayed virtual. Getting through COVID further show the passion Brilliant Detroit employees have. I have met many of them as well and each one is deeply involved with the families they serve and enjoy teaching others what Brilliant Detroit is and how they have impacted families. Overall I learned that Detroit is a city with a strong sense of community that is tied together with a passion for improving it and those who live in it.
