WEEK 3 – Detroit Community-Engaged Research Program

WEEK 3

Something I’ve learned is that Detroit is 80% African American. Another thing is that the tacos here are very hyped. I have yet to try some but I’m looking forward to it. During COVID AtBat took a pause and went virtual. Instead of having kids come in like a summer camp, they virtually taught kids leadership and responsibility. Once COVID slowed, students started coming in and we resumed teaching baseball. So far the only community members I’ve had the opportunity to talk to were the kids. The kids despite being in a big group need individual care, their needs include playing one on one catch and one on one talks about personal things. Getting close to the students is easier by relating with them and using their terminology. So far I’m excited for more students to come and am also looking forward to more social workers joining us.
