Through DCERP, I’ve discovered numerous nonprofit organizations serving my community, many of which I wasn’t aware of before. My site specifically, the Southwest Detroit Community Justice Center, underwent big changes due to the pandemic, especially dealing with the community court. Before the pandemic the judge conducted proceedings in person, and even had their chambers onsite. Now, they’ve shifted to online sessions. Many organizations similar to ours have had to do the same and adapt to the situation. They quickly found new ways to help the community more during the pandemic
Despite my research-focused role, I’ve had many opportunities to engage directly with community members. Whether translating for them or assisting with navigating how to sign up, these interactions have deepened my connection to the community.
