[WEEK 3] Diving Deeper – Detroit Community-Engaged Research Program

[WEEK 3] Diving Deeper

Working with this organization has been an incredibly enriching experience, marked by inclusivity and a welcoming environment. I have had the opportunity to engage with a diverse range of groups and organizations, including the Ford Senior Center, local volunteers, and children in summer programs. Additionally, participating in professional CPR training allowed me to connect with park staff from other nonprofit organizations. These experiences have provided me with deep insights into the local communities in Southwest Detroit, greatly enhancing both my personal and professional development.

Beyond my office responsibilities, I made a conscious effort to engage with the children and families to better connect with the local community. I found it fascinating that almost everyone who visited the park was a nearby resident, and they all seemed to know each other well. Similarly, the staff members had all grown up in Southwest Detroit and lived just a few blocks away from each other. Witnessing this tight-knit community firsthand, I now understand the source of their unwavering passion and dedication. I am incredibly proud to be part of this community, sharing the same commitment and drive.

This week, after delving into “How To Kill A City,” I gained a deeper understanding of gentrification and the history of Detroit. I recall hearing the term on my first day at work while driving through Southwest Detroit with a staff member. At the time, I didn’t fully grasp its relevance to Detroit, but now it’s much clearer. The city has experienced segregation due to gentrification, creating invisible boundaries that threaten to reduce its diversity. This new perspective has given me valuable insights into the challenges facing our community.

Moving forward, I am eager to learn more about the history and culture of Southwest Detroit and contribute to improving the neighborhood experience. By participating in weekly meetings, local conferences, and community gatherings, I am confident that I will gain a deeper understanding of the community’s needs and how best to serve them. I look forward to continuing this journey, fostering connections, and making a meaningful impact on the community I am proud to be a part of.
