Week 4–Reflecting on Culture

The workplace culture at the Neighborhood Services Organization is great. This is my fourth day here, and I love the environment here. Right when I came into the office I was introduced to everyone, and they were all very welcoming. Everyone seems to be very supportive of each other. People keep their doors open and walk in every so often to visit. On my second day, Peter, a guy who also works in our office, walked into our office and talked to us, we laughed and I truly enjoyed talking to him. On Monday we had our weekly staff meeting. It was serious but light at the same time. People would make small jokes and the vibe of the meeting was great. We got everything on the agenda covered in the meeting, but I truly enjoyed being able to feel relaxed and not awkward or stiff in the meeting. There are all different ages here. There are older women in my office who I already know care a lot about NSO and their work to make a difference. From sharing humus to printing off fliers for me, they are always willing to give a smile. The diversity at the office is amazing, with people of all different and backgrounds. We are the youngest people in the office, with Sophie and Elizabeth recent college graduates who are Jesuit Volunteers. They are leaving the first week in August and have been here for two years. They told me that inconsistency with employees in the office is a huge issue, as tenants create bonds with people, and as they leave other issues tend to happen because they don’t feel as comfortable with the new people. With this in mind I must get out of my comfort zone to talk to tenants and develop a relationship that can be trusted.
