Week Five: Stop Arresting the Children!

On Sunday, June 29th, 2014, 11-year-old Ti-yay Nelson was handcuffed by police after another boy accused him of stealing a television.

His mother, Krystal Williams, did not have any whereabouts on her son. The police did not inform her that they had taken him to three different detention facilities. Nor was she allowed to give medicine to her asthma-stricken son. When the police took Ti-yay away, he had an asthma attack because the police kept pressing him on the charges and threatened him.

When reporters asked Ti-yay why the other child would accuse him of such an act, Ti-yay said that the other boy was afraid of another boy in the classroom.

Despite this ordeal, the Detroit Police released Ti-yay the following evening. Williams even had the victim of the robbery check her home to show that the stolen television was not in her home. Furious with this series of events, Williams contacted Karri Mitchell to take over the case.

In my opinion, the Police had no right to handcuff young Ti-yay. Officers arrested him from the say-so of the classmate, not hard evidence. Because the police department acted so rashly, and especially with a minor, they are going to have to deal with the family attorney.

I think it was unethical and inhumane for the police to have arrested Ti-yay. Going into a situation with pre-conceived notions can definitely affect the outcome — which probably happened in this case. Unfortunately, this is not the only case of young, black boys being arrested these days. More and more children are being convicted everyday because of unfair societal norms. If this trend continues, the future will remain dark and meek. Instead of teaching young people the difference between right and wrong, they are being scooped up and put into detention facilities. Instead of putting them into a program that will teach them to be better citizens, they are being tossed into jails. This will give the children a bad reputation that will prevent them from having a job/career.
