News? – Detroit Community-Engaged Research Program

News?

Before I get into talking about a specific article, I want to generally talk about what it was like to search for news about Detroit. When I typed in search terms related to Detroit I was bombarded by two topics almost completely: Sports and Murder. It is really depressing that a whole city has been reduced to two topics. Imagine if the same was done for Chicago or New York. This is just so disappointing to think about how the media can just objectify and reduce the whole city to a murder sports fest.

The article I want to talk about talks about how power is being restored to many Detroit residents after about 140,000 people lost power recently. I think this is a fascinating article because it really reflects how utilities in the city are very different than in most other places. Water and electricity are actually very unstable in the city. I know that this mainly has to do with weather related issues, but this is still a major problem.
