Week six: DPS GO Green Challenge – Detroit Community-Engaged Research Program

Week six: DPS GO Green Challenge

I work in the Detroit Public School Go Green office along with another student. We mostly in charge of analyzing data from a survey taken during the school year. However both my co-worker and myself have had a chance to get out of the office with our supervisor Emile to visit some Detroit Public Schools. These visits are important to the work we do in the office because majority of the work is about these schools. Last week we got a chance to visit Bennett Elementary School. Both my co-worker and myself accompanied Emile as he went and gave a lesson about solar panels to the students. I was more excited about being inside the school and witnessing how everything works because I have had a chance to visit some schools that have been closed for years.

The one thing that stood out to me was the fact that Bennett Elementary School had air condition. Majority of the DPS do not have air condition so I was surprise to see that. However my supervisor  did explain to us what happened and how that lead to Bennett getting air condition. The students were very excited to hear about the solar panel as well as contribute to the lesson. After the in-class session, we relocated to the school garden outside the school so the students could have hands-on approach to the lesson that Emile was gave. They all wanted to take turns at the same time. They really enjoyed themselves with the experience. I believe this experience might have given them ideas about an upcoming contest that requires the students to submit a page solar panel creation. I am looking forward to reading the different inventions that they will come up with
