I have been observing a lot of how coworkers interact with each other, especially since I have been in the office pretty much the whole week. Its interesting to see the hierarchies in rank and age, especially considering how small an office it is. From the founders to the manager(ish) to the americorps workers to us the interns. I could have totally been a sociology major in another life.
Also non profit work is really similar to school (well at least the classes that I take). You are either doing nothing or everything. Both are really project based. Right now I am still in the nothing phase, but I know this is the last week of it because next week the academy starts!!!
In Detroit I have been observing very different cultures in different places. I have really only been like 3 places but they have been different. In midtown, its gentified a f, like its pretty but idk how else to describe it really. Like and I feel like thats me too because Midtown doesn’t fit my perceive notion of Detroit, which I am working on expanding (from the high amount of white people around to the expensive stores, etc). On campus, it’s college so it feels like ann arbor on campus feels. Also i have been to some supermercados in Southwest aka Mexican town(to shop for one of the catering events that the students put on and with a friend) and it feels like the supermercados in Lansing.
I have mostly been experiencing Detroit through people and one way that I have been interacting with alot of detroiters is in my bible study. Like its so interesting to see how locals interpret different parts of the city instuff. And also how real people are for better or worse. Like even in my bible study where it has the same structure as the one i attend in ann arbor but due to the different people its so different. Also even talking to my coworkers. Today i was listening two of my black coworkers talk about race relations and it was cool to see how they perceive it especially since both of them aren’t from the city but came here to work this job.
I have learned alot being here and i really like it. Even the importance of hanging out with people and how that helps you to do a better job, and i put in that work by going to lunch with some of my coworkers today, its cool 🙂
My phone is on its last leg of its career being my phone, but the pic above is of some of the food that we were shopping for on Tuesday in Mexican Town. The Students of DFA createed this masterpieces! So excited to start working with them next week!
