Since the beginning of the summer I’ve wanted to go to the Museum of African American History. That dream was fulfilled when a group of us went last month. As a student at the University of Michigan, I’ve gained a passion for my culture and history and I found that the Wright museum was a great way to expand my knowledge. At the museum I was able to learn about African American history from ancient civilization to present. It left me with a great sense of what my ancestors have been through to get us to this point.
Also, it left me with the understanding that there is still so much to be done. We as a people still face some of the same problems that faced our ancestors. After going to the museum, I felt even more energized to go out and make a difference, so that one day we can truly look at out history as the past and not the present.
While this experience was not apart of my placement it still was a great way to learn. Experiences and opportunities like this show how amazing this program is. Since participants work and LIVE in Detroit, we can dive deeper into all that Detroit has to offer. This experience is helping us grow in every way possible.
