Week 1: The Excitement – Detroit Community-Engaged Research Program

Week 1: The Excitement

Dear Calahna,

As I start this new and exciting journey, I can’t help but have so much joy. I love the non-profit, Brilliant Detroit. They truly want to help these low income neighborhoods succeed in life. One of their main goals is to help with the families’ children to be Pre-King ready. I am looking forward to contributing to this awesome initiative to make Detroit neighborhood’s better. What Brilliant Detroit is doing should be done more throughout the city of Detroit. The people who are coming into Midtown and downtown Detroit need  to help more non-profits make a difference in the neighboorhood, where the majority of the Detroiters live. Although I am from Detroit I have never heard about any of these programs, so I am really excited to be on board. I am going to learn a great deal from Detroit living in a different part of it on my own.

My apartment is beautiful and all of my roommates are really cool. I am excited to bond with everyone in the program. I was elated when we had sofas delivered to our apartments. Whoever asked for sofas, thank you!! The WiFi isn’t the best…I wish I could work from home but I can’t because it says I’m not on secure wifi, so that sucks. Other than that everything else is cool. It was fun going grocery for myself and I’m excited to try out different recipes from my Pintrest.

My supervisor Cindy is very nice and she wants to make sure that while we are helping develop Brilliant Detroit into the best that it can be, we will also learn as much as we possibly can. I love where attitude about Detroit and you can tell she is really passionate about her work. I am looking forward to continue working with Cindy and still stay in contact with her even after I am done with the internship. She really cares about using our strengths to help build the non-profit up. She gave me and Dominique a book about finding what are our strengths in the work force that came with ano online quiz. I am excited to see what my strengths are! I can even keep my results in mind for future jobs and projects I work on. I can already tell that this summer will be another amazing one and I will leave this internship with plenty of valuable knowledge that I can apply to my life. I really thank God for such an amazing opportunity.
