Every Day its Something New – Detroit Community-Engaged Research Program

Every Day its Something New

Every day its something new. I never know what to expect and I’m always learning new things especially at my internship at the Osborn Neighborhood Alliance. Every day I am open to learning and observing. This past week I have been observing the dynamic of the Osborn community and how it functions. I have met a lot of amazing people in the Osborn area who were very open to answering all of my questions that I had about the neighborhood and informing me about the system. I have learned a lot about public health issues such as  urban blight and the Detroit school systems, including Public, Charter and EAA schools. I have also observed how many small minority  businesses that are in the Osborn community which I find so inspiring. This week I even had the chance to visit the Bel Air Luxury theatre in Detroit and hear the mayor speak about his 10 step plan for district 3. It was incredible to see all the neighborhood residents come and voice there concerns with the community.

I have observed how tight knit of a community Osborn is and how many people know each other and work together to solve community issues. They  are very hard working and I enjoy being in their company. Aside from my internship I have been observing a lot of the new shops that I have been seeing in Midtown and I am becoming more and more familiar with Midtown. It’s so interesting to be in the neighborhoods by day and in midtown by night. They are basically two completely different Detroits, but I love them both and am I seeing growth in both areas.
