I complain about the area my workplace is in, however, the people I work with are all interesting; similar but different. Our ages reign from eighteen to possibly 50 years old. In some cases, my coworkers would make jokes in relation to their adult lives. You know, paying bills, buying a house, being healthy, etc. Sometimes their small talk floats over my head because it’s nothing I can relate to.
Other times, we have one-on-one conversations that shifts my perspective. A black man in my office talked with me about my future aspirations. He encouraged me to speak to the president of Develop Detroit because she’s from Detroit, been through grad school, and is a black woman who could be a better mentor to me than he could. Intimate settings, like talks on an individual basis, reveal a mentee-mentor relationship rather than coworkers. However, some of the people in my office have kids, so that could influence how they interact with me.
The dynamics are really interesting though.
