Week Eight, Don’t Wait – Detroit Community-Engaged Research Program

Week Eight, Don’t Wait

I thought that the events we attended were always both very interesting, and very informative. The Tuesday meetings ended up being my favorite of the two, just because I felt like there was more variation in them.

The Arab American Museum event was probably my favorite, just because it completely surprised me with how good it was. The Arab American Museum is one of those things that people in Dearborn sometimes roll their eyes at, because we don’t really consider it by the community, for the community. Most people visit it once, and realize that it’s kind of underwhelming, and not at all what they thought it would be. However, the music at the end of the event really blew me away.

The band that flew in from Los Angeles is one of my new favorites, and Say Her Name was such a powerful performance.

For my own Thursday event, I wish I had thought more outside of the box. There are things I’m finding or remembering in the city, and I’m thinking to myself, “duh, why didn’t you do this.”

But overall, the events were a lot of fun, and really added to the program for me.
