The cues I have received at work include a lot of mixed signals. One simple example of this is how we are supposed to dress in our workspace. Josie and I wear business casual but plenty of people at Tech Town wear the most casual clothes you can wear. So in that way it can be confusing. Another more complicated example of mixed signals in the culture is the community engagement we do. On one hand, we are given a lot of freedom and control over educating Detroit children. We are the outsiders coming in to support a community. On the other hand, we are often put in our place. By this, I mean that we are reminded of how much we do not know about the culture of people of color and the community of Detroit.
