Week 3 – Detroit Community-Engaged Research Program

Week 3

I have been noticing that my organization is very widespread. There are over 1,600 members of the Garden Resource Program which supplies seeds, transplants, and support to Detroiters for just $15/year. Something that I knew, but never really saw up close was how Detroit’s leaders have found making residents pay for the crumbling infrastructure the ‘solution’ while giving tremendous tax breaks to businesses moving in. I had no idea about the drainage charge Detroiters faced and I also found that they have one of the oldest sewage/drainage systems in the country.

KGD also has another program called Grown in Detroit. This is a stand at Eastern Market where growers can sell their produce. For a single farmer renting space and purchasing supplies for this can be challenging, but over 55 of them cooperatively sell at the Grown in Detroit stand. Thousands of dollars are made in the process and every penny goes back to the farmers! The organization is able to sell good produce to Detroiters (among other visitors at Eastern Market), grown by Detroiters, and profits go back to Detroiters.

The photo I chose to include is a graph with the KGD farms around the city. There are many more urban farms around the city, so keep in mind that this is only one organization.
