Week 7 – Detroit Community-Engaged Research Program

Week 7

An experience that really stuck out to me was when a coworker invited me to a Pink Flamingo Dinner. This was his friend’s food truck right around the corner from his house. His friend was a welder by day but opened up the Pink Flamingo for Thursday dinners with the neighbors. There was a big fire pit that Kristen, the owner, welded herself with tree stumps surrounding it and tables and chairs scattered throughout the plot. I was able to meet many neighbors and even travelers that were staying in a near-by hostle. It was amazing to see my coworker interact with those in his community. He said that he intends to leave Detroit one day, as he has a fairly nomadic past, but struggles to ever do it because the community is unlike anywhere he has ever been. It was amazing to see a little ‘underground’ spot where everyone knew everyone. Even if someone didn’t recognize a face, he/she would go up to that person and introduce his/herself.
