Looking back on my first reflection ever written, I have definitely grown and learned so much from this program. I learned new skills such as how to use google sheets effectively and how to relate to different people. I learned how to communicate with people and ensure they understand where I’m coming from. From DCERP, I have expanded my knowledge of Detroit and how many challenges and hardships are affecting the residents of this city. I’ve learned about the new and upcoming changes that are happening to improve and transform areas in Detroit. Because of this internship, I am able to share new information and inform people about some of their misconceptions of Detroit. Continually, I have changed my thoughts when it comes to food insecurities and who is being affected the most by it. I have also altered my thinking on the idea of gentrification and the advantages/disadvantages of it. I have been able to share what I’ve learned to friends and family and inform them of these concepts as well.
This internship strengthened my reasoning of going into Public Health through working with residents and learning about how COVID has changed their daily lives and their schedules. It has given me the momentum to continue learning about social determinants of health and to continue educating people about it. Overall, my expectations absolutely met my reality because coming into this program I wanted to form bonds with people at my site and in my cohort which I was able to accomplish. I wanted to learn more about Detroit and all that the city encompasses, which I was able to achieve.
This internship flew by so quickly, and I can’t wait to see everyone in the fall. 🙂
My internship has done the same! I feel as if I have learned so much and have taken these experiences with me as I decide what to do for the ‘rest of my life.’ It has definitely ignited a fire within me. I’m glad that this experience has pushed you into public health with a focus on the social determinants of health. COVID has exposed so many travesties within our institutions.
I hope we can all meet in the fall too!
