Week 1 of DCERP! – Detroit Community-Engaged Research Program

Week 1 of DCERP!

Hey everyone! My name is Raymond Ugaz but you can call me Ray! I’m rising Sophomore at U of M studying Biology. A community to me is kind of like a second home around people that you can have fun interacting with and building new bonds. It’s almost like a place you can turn to when you want to feel safe and need some company from others. Something that attracted me to doing community work wasn’t necessarily the city of Detroit but rather wanting to give back to a community since I never really got the chance to do that when I was back in my hometown. I feel like a strength I have is that I persevere through endeavor and don’t give up easily. I feel like if things start to go downhill for my project I wouldn’t be throwing in the towel but rather regrouping and seeing how I can work to make the project successful and turn things around. I want to work on work ethic with people because I’ve never really been able to do that on a more professional level since it’s always just been mostly through school work. The thing that would make me proud at the end of the internship would probably just be making it out. Not in a way that I’m glad it’s over with but rather that I’d be proud about finally being able to give back to a community for once. It’s always been one of my dreams and what better way to start than this.

  1. Hey Ray! I admire your desire to challenge yourself and to serve others! I’m sure you will not only “make it out,” but also make a lasting impact on the community you will be working with.

  2. Hi Ray,
I think it’s great that you’ve decided to give back to a community like Detroit when given the opportunity. The perseverance you named as a strength of yours is definitely an important one to have and I’m sure it will serve you well. I agree this is a wonderful way to start working towards one of your dreams and thank you for sharing that with us!- Maia
