When I started DCERP, I hoped to learn more about Islam and the Black Muslim community in Detroit. These past nine weeks have taught me so much about both of the aforementioned topics. I have gotten the chance to visit the Muslim Center in Detroit, meet community leaders, and edit video-recorded interviews. These real-life experiences have taught me so much more about the Black Muslim community and the history of Detroit than a textbook could have ever taught me. Once my fellowship ends, I plan on spending more time volunteering with Dream of Detroit and the Dream Storytelling Project, as this research project aligns with my values of cultural education and empowerment.
